Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial because harmful bacteria in the mouth can be associated with various health problems. The mouth serves as a gateway to the gastrointestinal tract and other body parts, and it houses a diverse microbial community, second only to the gut in size, with over 700 species of microorganisms.

 

Poor oral hygiene can disrupt the growth of normally harmless bacterial communities in the mouth due to changes in pH, temperature, and oxygen levels. This disruption can lead to inflammation, gum bleeding, tooth decay, and periodontitis. Damaged gums can release inflammatory molecules into the bloodstream, triggering low-level chronic inflammation and diseases like type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, and obesity. Additionally, bacteria from the gums can spread to surrounding tissues, releasing toxins that can travel throughout the body.

 

To avoid these risks, it is important to practice good dental hygiene, including regular check-ups, regular brushing to prevent dental plaque formation, and avoiding high-carbohydrate and high-sugar foods that promote tooth decay. Including antioxidant-rich foods like fresh fruits and vegetables in the diet can support the balance of oral bacteria. Additionally, maintaining a balanced diet, adequate rest, managing stress levels, and engaging in regular exercise contribute to a healthy oral microbiome. By ensuring the harmony of microorganisms in the mouth, the risk of associated diseases can be reduced.
